As I begin Reuben’s journey on home learning. I wanted to introduce flash cards to Reuben asap. Why flashcards? Firstly flashcards normally come in categories and within a category there are are couple of flashcards. When you flash these words in a group, it increases the brain’s chances of remembering them. Secondly, flash cards are portable and you can bring them out even in the car ride to flash to your kid. Thirdly, flashcards enhances the right brain of the kid.
Thanks to the kind folks at Rightbrainbabies, Reuben could embark on his flashcard journey. Rightbrainbabies was started up by a parent couple. The couple started off making their own flashcards but later found it to be too tedious and time- consuming. It took them a long time to find similar flashcards that are designed according to Dr. Glenn Doman’s and Prof Shichida’s specifications. They decided to started this business with a simple belief of providing early educational flashcards for parents who want to give their babies an early education and right- brain development, without the hassle of making it by themselves. Over time they have expanded our business to more than just flashcards. They carry a variety of products that cater to early education and development from babies to toddlers. To find out more about the products that they carry, do hop on to their website here
We were trilled to receive a box of WeHappy Encyclopedia set of flashcards. The set consist of 300 pieces of flashcards that comprises a number of categories. The categories include animal names, insect names, car brands and flower names. This set of flashcards is suitable for kids aged 7 months all the way to 6 years old.
The standard practice of using flash cards is to flash in succession to the kid at least 400 to 500 a day for a start. Some people recommend to hit 700 cards per day. Every card flashed to the kid should take no longer than a second.
Below is a picture of the box of flashcards that we received. The quality of the cards were decent. It is not like those cheapo flashcards that can be easily torn. What makes it good is that there is a detailed explanation of the word in Chinese at the back of the card. This is good if you want to train up your kid’s Chinese.
One thing good about these flashcards is that there is explanation of the meaning of the picture. However it is in Chinese. Below is an elephant and a bowling ball flashcard and on the other side of the card is its name in English and Chinese as well as the explanation in Chinese.
For the first time, I flashed 250 cards to Reuben. One thing about brain training with flashcards is that it can be completed very fast. It is a very good activity for infants as they have very low attention span. I took about 5 minutes to flash finish the set of 250 cards.
At the end of the session, Reuben was captivated probably due to the speed of the cards that was being flashed in front of him. Considering his low attention span, he managed to stare at about 70 cards before i had to re-catch his attention again. In my opinion, flash cards is a very fuss free way to build up a child’s brain. It only takes up the most 10 to 15 minutes of your time every day.
