Today I decided to introduce three product materials to Reuben. Wooden material, Plastic material and Metal material. I wanted to let the kiddo hit on these stuff. I used my cajon for wood, a bowl for plastic and a pot lid for metal. For those who do not know me, I am a percussionist and I can play the cajon. Below is a video of me playing the cajon with a few drum beats to Reuben. Look at how attentive he was. I wanted to catch Reuben attention for the activity so I decided to entertain him a for a minute. After playing on it, I let Reuben touch the wooden material. I wanted him to know what is the feeling of touching wood. I kept repeating the word “wood” to Reuben.
Next I decided to let Reuben touch and feel the plastic bowl. While doing that, I kept repeating the word “plastic” to Reuben many times. I showed him that he could use his palms to keep hitting the plastic bowl. Same for the metal lid, I kept repeating the word “metal” to Reuben many times and told him to attempt hitting the metal lid to make some sound. All babies are born with the ability to hit things and make sound (music). We just need to nurture this ability. That is why I believe every baby is born a percussionist =)
After all this touching and hitting, I explained to Reuben that metal feels cold in a cold room and wood feels warm. I wanted Reuben to know what is the difference between “hot” and “cold”. He could have been experiencing the very hot Singapore weather and the super cold air conditioned room since the day he was born but unless someone explains to him, he will never know the answer. More than explaining, today I let Reuben touched the cold metal lid and the warm wooden cajon so that he can experience what I was talking about. At that point of time, my head was telling me that Reuben does not understand anything but my heart was impressing upon me that I have deposited something new in his life today.

This whole activity lasted about 20 minutes and I could see the smiling face of Reuben. I knew that he enjoyed touching and hitting the different product materials today. The above activity is something very easy that can be done at home. You can just replace the cajon with anything wooden like a wooden box or a wooden ruler. I believe an infant’s senses can be awakened as early as 6 months. You just need to tell the kid what he is touching and let him enjoy the different textures.
