Baby Colic is a very well-known term among all the parents in the world. In this article I will share with you my experience with Colic with my son Reuben.
What is colic?
Wikipedia says it is a form of pain that starts and stops adruptily. It is due to the muscular contractions of a hollow tube near the colon area. Colic happens because the body wants to relieve the obstruction by forcing the content out. It causes episodes of crying for more than 3 hours per day
During which week of the infant development does colic occurs?
It happens during the 5th week and it can last all the way to 4 months for the more serious cases. Normally it is nothing to worry about as it will usually go away after 3 months. There is only a 5 percent chance that it may be linked to a more serious disease.
What causes baby colic?
Experts have no definite reason for the cause of baby colic. In fact no one knows the actual reason why it happens in infants. Some say it may be exposure to cigarette smoke, while others say it may be the immature development of the infant’s digestive system. There was some research saying that colic could be a way for babies to get the attention of the parents. None of the above mentioned reasons could be the definite reason for colic.
Daddy Chow’s experience with Baby Colic and Reuben
Baby Colic struck Reuben during the early part of Reuben’s 5th week on planet Earth. When it first struck us, we were at a loss. We could not differentiate hunger cries from colic cries. The pitch sounded the same. Every night the crying pattern happened. It could as early as 530pm all the way to as late as 2am in the night. Me and my wife tried all methods to soothe Reuben, We tried patting him, carrying him, walked around the house, changing milk formula, rubbing medicated oil (Ruyi oil), using anti colic drops. We even jogged around the house. There were nights that we could not take it and we even brought him to KKH to check up because we were worried that there was something serious. The doctor at KKH said Reuben was very normal. This behavior went on for 4 weeks before it gotten better.
After a few days, we learnt how to recognize when Reuben was having colic. The below are some of the signs
- Arching of Body
- Tucking in of both knees
- Hardness of stomach at the sides
How did we cope with the baby colic?
Baby colic can be stressful for parents as it means you have to give full attention to your baby. You have to try to do things to soothe him/her. For us we did a few things every night.
- Rubbing of medicated oil (Ruyi Oil) on stomach
- Baby Massage every night. We did things like leg cycling and light rubbing of the stomach
- Carrying Reuben over the shoulder and dancing around the house. Movements help to distract Reuben from the pain.
- Playing his favourite songs (Wheels on the Bus go round and round) and reciting some Chinese poems.
- Bought a rocking chair with vibration for him to lie down facing up at adjustable angles
The above mentioned things helped us a lot. Right now Reuben is at the 12th week and his colic is almost gone already. We thank GOD that his is getting better and his sleep pattern is more a less regulated.
For those parents who face colicky infants, do not despair for this is just a growing process and it will pass very soon. Take heart and be encouraged that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. The growing up process of your infant will over-shadow the momentarily colic that your infant is facing.
